AV, UAC and other nuisances
For the past few days one of my Vista machines has been nagging me about my anti-virus, claiming it was not turned on. That’s not what the AV tool said, and no amount of restarts would halt the nagging. Eventually I found that disabling the Vista UAC solved the problem. I was tempted to leave the UAC off, but thought better of it. I still have a lot of legacy software on the system and UAC does registry and file system virtualization, a mechanism that permits legacy software to interact with alternative registry and file system areas as if they were the original (security sensitive) areas. Turning off UAC would restore their access to the original areas where they would A) not find any data they had previously saved and B) probably mess up the protected areas.
