802.11n – the winner is… Intel

Despite the efforts of Motorola, Nokia and Airgo, it looks like Intel, Sony and Atheros have taken the lead in a recent IEEE meeting to decide the future of the latest network technology. It may sound like the new wireless LAN technology is just around the corner, but I know how these standardisation processes work, and I bet that even a year from now we’ll still be wondering when the technology will be ready. Meanwhile, the impatience of the technology market will see a variety of beta versions appearing, based on draft specifications and guesswork, and we’ll have to deal with the chaos of incompatible deployments. Just wait and see.
