DAB and the white-noise alarm clock
Last December I migrated to Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), taking advantage of the trial service of the national broadcast. Audio quality is fantastic, even better than the FM broadcast I would normally listen to. Not even a whisper in the gaps between programmes. Perfection.
Then, a few weeks ago, the DAB system had a temporary black-out. To be expected, I suppose, given that it is a “trial” period. Nothing to worry about, except that it had me two hours late for work.
Why? Well, you see, my DAB radio is also my bedside alarm clock. So instead of waking to the morning chat on my preferred radio station, I was treated to silence. Perfect silence. Not even the white noise that would have emanated from the now-defunct traditional radio. Pure digital silence. Not so much as a crackle to disturb my slumber.
So, when you hear that DAB is perfect radio, just remember that you can get a bit too much of perfection.
