The noise at MoMoDublin

I figure about 30 people turned up for the latest Mobile Monday Dublin. Stephen Oman of CW took the floor (after everyone had filled their plates with food) and did the usual sales pitch. Host’s prerogative. Kieran Mahon from Vodafone had a few things to say about the trend towards more mobile bandwidth, mobile TV and all the other good things, including real mobile Web. But he figures we’re not going to see it for “several years”.  Hélène Haughney gave a refreshing summary of Nubiq‘s view of creating simple sites for the mobile Web. Check out their offering; it’s interesting, especially Zinadoo. She did say that if you wanted a more complex mobile site you should check out MobileAware. Thanks Hélène!

We were supposed to be discussing whether or not the mobile Web was inevitable. Unfortunately it was hard to have any coherent debate because of the noise at the venue. We were being drowned out by the punters on the lower floor. Everyone was upbeat about all the things that would be possible in the near future. I just couldn’t resist, so I took to the floor and spent a few minutes pointing out that each of these fabulous future things would be challenged by what I had in my hand, which I later revealed to be the battery out of my phone. It’s a common theme of mine: no matter how powerful we make the devices or the networks, if the battery can’t last long enough, nobody will be interested.

Big news of the evening: Andrea Trasatti has moved to dotMobi, as Director of Device Initiatives. I’m pleased to hear that he’ll still be participating in the W3C DDWG. Good catch for dotMobi.

So, did we conclude that the mobile Web is inevitable? To be honest, I don’t know. I think we merely concluded that we’d like to think it’s inevitable because if it’s not, then we’ve a lot of very hard work ahead of us.
